Choosing the perfect bouquet to compliment your wedding dress sounds simple enough; wouldn't you just choose the bouquet you like the best and forget about the rest? It is, after all, your wedding, and you can carry any flowers you'd like.

But will they truly speak to the beauty and design of the dress you've chosen to wear for your dream day?

When picking the bouquet you'll carry with you down the aisle, hold in photos, and toss to your bridesmaids, it's important to consider the minor details of the bouquet itself; the size of the flowers, the colors, the types, and the shape of the flowers all play a role in how your bouquet will compliment (or clash with) your wedding dress.

To help you pick the perfect bouquet, we're sharing a few of our best tips - and don't forget to work with your florist on this aspect of your wedding flowers!

In-Season Flowers

Β

The first thing you should ask your florist about is in-season flowers. Some flowers simply aren't available during certain parts of the year, which may mean your preferred flowers are not available for the season or time during which you're getting married! Your florist will be able to walk you through the flowers available to you and can provide you with options as to how you can design your bouquet using flowers which are in-season.

Consider the Colours of Your Dress

Some flowers may clash with your dress depending on its color; creams, ivories, whites, or altogether different, non-traditional colors all pair well with certain shapes, sizes, and types of flowers. If you can, try bringing a swatch of your dress's fabric with you when you meet with your florist to design your bridal bouquet; this will allow you both a better understanding as to which flowers pair best with your gown.

Your Dress Style

The style of your dress can help determine the size and shape of your bouquet. For example...

Gowns - These larger, often more opulent dresses pair well with bouquets that match with the style of the dress. A bouquet that is too small or modest in design may get lost among the significant fabric of the dress, and you'll want to show off your bouquet! The more opulent the dress, the more opulent the bouquet should be in order to compliment the style of your dress.

Slim/Fitted - For slimmer fitting dresses (such as sheaths or mermaid style dresses), a medium-sized bouquet with a whimsical touch will compliment the dress beautifully.

Sequence/Embellished - If your dress is embellished with many details or designed to be a masterpiece which draws the eye in every direction, your bouquet should be designed to compliment that style without detracting from it. Longer, more flowy bouquets with a few feature flowers and whimsical greenery to match will do the trick in complimenting your dress.

Sizes, sizes, sizes

Depending on your dress, the size of the flowers you use in your bouquet will either compliment or totally distract from your gown. You may find, for example, that as a petite bride, a larger bouquet distracts from both you and your dress, while taller or more voluptuous brides can benefit from a large bouquet which won't look to small or modest. Your florist can provide you with options and suggestions as to how your bouquet can pair larger flowers (such as peonies) with delicate touches of greenery or flowers (like baby's breath) depending on the design or style of your dress!
